The tape test

US Navy circumference method

AnyoneTwo minutesFree

Open to anyone. Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for — it runs in the page while you read it.

The body-fat estimate the US Navy has used since 1984, worked out in your browser. The page also has the history behind it, how to measure so the result means something, and an honest account of how far wrong it can be.

  • A tape measure
  • Two minutes
  • Nothing else

A photograph, the tape, and the gap

AnyoneFive minutesFree

Open to anyone. Your photograph never leaves your device — it is opened by the page, shown to you, and forgotten when you close it.

Read your body fat from a photograph, run the tape test beside it, and see the difference between the two worked out automatically. They will not agree. Finding out by how much is the most useful thing here.

  • A photo of your upper body
  • A tape measure
  • Five minutes

Why both, and not just the better one

Because there is no better one. Two methods measuring the same body on the same afternoon will give you two different numbers, and a third method would give you a third. That is not a fault in any of them — it is what estimating body fat is.

The number is not the measurement. The change in the number, taken the same way every time, is the measurement.

That is the single most useful idea on this website, and it is easier to believe once you have watched two honest methods disagree about you personally. Which is why they sit next to each other rather than one being hidden.

These two are public. The other two apps are not.

There are two more apps behind the training itself — a daily record and an assessment tool — and those are for clients. They are not on this page and there is nothing to download. You can see what they look like and what they hold on how it works.

The two above are the opposite: open to anybody who finds this site, working entirely inside your own browser, with nothing kept and nothing sent to me. Use them without telling me you exist.

Neither of these is a diagnosis and neither replaces proper testing. Trevor is a trainer, not a physician. Body composition is measured properly during a physical assessment and on the Mobile Metabolic Laboratory.
